Your Responses Make Sense.

The Safety Map is a framework for understanding how your system learns what is safe, predicts what might happen next, and organizes protection around those predictions.

Alyssa Decker, founder of The Safety Map nervous system safety framework.

When patterns persist despite insight, regulation, therapy, or years of trying to change, the question may not be:

“What am I doing wrong?”

It may be:

“What is my system still trying to protect?”

The Safety Map™ | Developed by Alyssa Decker

Why the Safety Map?

You may know where a pattern came from.

You may recognize your triggers. Understand your attachment patterns. Know how to regulate your nervous system. You may have spent years in therapy, read the books, learned the language, and developed enormous insight into yourself.

And still find yourself asking:

Why am I still doing this?

Safety Mapping starts somewhere different.

Rather than beginning with how to change the behavior, we become curious about the structure underneath it:

What is your system predicting? What might the response be protecting? What conditions would need to change for another response to become available?

The goal isn't to force the system into a different response.

It's to understand why the current one makes sense.

What is a Safety Map?

Everyone has a Safety Map. And every Map is unique.

A Safety Map is a metaphor for the system within you responsible for keeping you safe.

Throughout your life, your Map has been collecting information from your experiences and using that data to predict what might happen next and what responses are most likely to protect you.

When something harmful, traumatic, or overwhelming happens, the Map can change. New protective patterns may form—and those patterns can remain long after the circumstances that created them have changed.

Safety Mapping helps us understand the Map beneath the pattern.

What Makes This Different?

Regulation matters. But regulation isn't the whole story.

The Safety Map explores the conditions that may make repair and change possible - including safety, access, agency, curiosity, capacity, prediction, protection, and self-trust.

It asks why a useful tool may create change for one person and not another.

Why insight can be profound without becoming embodied change.

Why a person can appear regulated while remaining internally braced.

And why a behavior that looks irrational from the outside may make perfect sense when we understand the prediction beneath it.

The Safety Map Framework is not intended to compete with existing modalities.

It asks a different question:

What conditions allow the system to repair, and how to we create them?

“With Alyssa's guidance I am now able to observe my humanity from a place of much more neutrality rather than judgment. I respect the patterns my nervous system has put in place and am able to gently work towards goals that make my life fuller and more complete."

- Bethany

“Sincerely, thank you for your work. I see movement that I have not seen in a long time with other modalities: years of therapy, group therapy, books, endless hours of YouTube.”

hi, I'm Alyssa

Alyssa Decker, founder of The Safety Map nervous system safety framework.

I'm an author, speaker, human behavior consultant, and founder of the Safety Map Institute.

My work explores a deceptively simple question:

Why can human beings understand exactly what they want to change -and still find that change unavailable?

The Safety Map grew from years of observing the gap between insight and change: people who understood their histories, recognized their patterns, knew regulation tools, and were working extraordinarily hard—yet remained stuck in responses they could not simply think or regulate their way out of.

Rather than assuming the response itself is the problem, I became interested in the structure underneath it.

What if the response still makes sense?

Today, I develop and teach the Safety Map Framework, work directly with individuals and groups, and explore its applications across healing, relationships, human behavior, and professional practice.

My forthcoming book, The Safety Map: Your Body Makes Sense—and the Missing Piece Between Insight and Repair, will introduce the framework in depth.
